As a Broadband Technician II
, you will perform intermediate to complex installations, disconnects and service changes for residential customers, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home RFoG and GPON). These services include, but are not limited to, video service, HSD Services, and home phone service. This role performs moderate troubleshooting from the tap to the customer's electronic devices (TV, DVD, Modem etc.). This role performs underground and/or aerial construction involved with system plant, along with its repair and maintenance supporting various customer-focused activities.

This position will be responsible for installing, splicing, repairing and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and coax cable. This position will need to be knowledgeable of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications.

Location note: This position can be hired at either a Broadband Technician I, II, or III level depending on qualifications. Please reference each job posting for minimum qualifications and submit an application for each level of interest.

Responsibilities
  • Performs intermediate and complex installation of all necessary cable wiring (interior and exterior) and hardware from the tap/MST to the customer's equipment for reception of cable and other company services offered for single, multi-family customers and/or commercial dwellings over both Fiber Optic and Coax delivery methods.
  • Inspects and corrects NESC safety violations for new construction builds and new service drops and legacy facilities; coordinates underground drop burial work with contractors and in-house crews; handles permits from government agencies as required; tracks and updates status within systems.
  • Ensures work meets construction and government standards; conducts pre-inspections to verify serviceability and identifies efficient routes to provide service.
  • Performs connects (new connects and reconnects), disconnects, upgrades, downgrades, relocates, installs additional outlets, fiber connections, and hardline cutovers; installs or removes equipment at single or multiple unit dwellings.
  • Uses test equipment to identify and repair signal strength issues and ensure optimum reception for optical and RF; interprets system maps and blueprints; may climb poles, ladders, towers, or use bucket trucks as needed.
  • Maintains quality control in accordance with applicable regulations (OSHA, FCC, NEC, NESC) and records system, drop, and in-house leakage information on work orders and surveys.
  • Promotes cable, internet, and other company services and educates customers on proper use and available options.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.

Other Qualifications

  • Upon hire, must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
  • Requires being available for on-call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
  • Upon hire, must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
  • Ability to maintain DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements related to operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 lbs.
  • Reliable and responsible with a strong work ethic and team mindset.
  • Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications or burial construction.
  • Familiarity with company products and services; proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task with limited instruction.
