Associate Director of the Alvord Center for Global & Environmental Studies
The Loomis Chaffee School seeks an Associate Director for the Alvord Center for Global & Environmental Studies. Founded in 2015, the Alvord Center develops globally and environmentally engaged student leaders who not only learn about the world and the environment but also explore how they can actively contribute to positive change. Through purposeful travel, sustainability initiatives, environmental fieldwork, and cross-disciplinary coursework, students and faculty develop the knowledge, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving skills needed to address complex local and global challenges.
The ideal candidate will have a compelling combination of the following skills and experiences: meaningful experience working with students in a secondary school setting, a demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability with a global perspective, classroom teaching experience, the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplines, and a passion for helping students engage thoughtfully with the wider world through place-based and experiential learning.
The successful candidate will also be committed to helping students develop the agency, knowledge, skills, and sense of responsibility to take meaningful action locally and globally. Creativity, initiative, and a strong commitment to community-engaged learning are highly valued. - Lead on-campus environmental sustainability organizations and help facilitate environmentally focused initiatives and special projects, including the execution of the following:
- Composting program
- Waste and recycling program
- Land Management initiatives
- Citizen Science projects & community collaborations
- Assist in the development of curriculum for Loomis Chaffee’s Global & Environmental Studies Certificate program (GESC).
- Lead/Chaperone International Education Programs (IEPs).
- Teach two academic courses, preferably in the field of Environmental Science.
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred.
- Three to five years (or more) of experience in a secondary school, preferably at a boarding school or other independent school.
- Current and extensive knowledge of sustainability and place-based & experiential learning.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to collaborate across constituencies.
- An affinity for a boarding school community and an obvious joy in working with teenagers.
- Integrity, confidentiality, and a strong work ethic.
This position is a 10-month, full-time position with the potential for on-campus housing. Salary is competitive and the employment package consists of excellent benefits, including health care coverage and retirement plan.
