Environmental Educator I

The Town of Windsor, CT seeks an enthusiastic and experienced educator to join our team to assist coordination and delivery of environmental education programs for children, adults, and families at Northwest Park. The Park is a 473-acre living classroom featuring native forests, fields, wetlands, and heritage breed farm animals. Our mission is to foster an understanding and appreciation of nature and build community through a variety of educational and passive recreational experiences.

This is a paid part time position that reports to the Environmental Education Supervisor. Work schedule is flexible, depending on the calendar of scheduled programs, with an average of 15 hours per week. Most programs occur on weekdays between 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Outreach programs sometimes fall outside of these hours. Heaviest concentration is in fall and spring. This role primarily supports programming during the school year, but can continue into the summer months.

The hourly rate is $21.12 per hour. Requires a drug screen (includes screening for marijuana) and criminal background check before hiring.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach and plan environmental education programs and assist with special events at Northwest Park and in school classrooms; instruct workshops and activities for a wide range of audiences in all seasons
  • Work with animals used in education programs as necessary (reptiles, amphibians and arthropods); support maintenance of interactive exhibits
  • Assist with daily park operations and customer service for park visitors

Our Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of natural sciences, regional natural history, and related environmental issues
  • Familiarity with informal and outdoor education methods for a wide range of audiences
  • Effective oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences, including children and adults of all abilities
  • Ability to lead outdoor activities in varying weather conditions; ability to walk over uneven ground for extended periods of time
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, other employees, volunteers, and the general public

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or coursework in natural sciences, environmental education or a related field, with direct experience in developing and teaching environmental educational programs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
