Overview

The Electron Beam (EB) Welder is responsible for performing highly precise electron beam welding operations on aerospace and defense components in accordance with customer specifications, engineering drawings, and applicable quality standards. This role requires strong technical skill, attention to detail, and strict adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory requirements, including AS9100 and special-process controls.

Key Responsibilities

Electron Beam Welding Operations

  • Set up, program, and operate electron beam welding equipment, including vacuum chamber preparation and beam parameter configuration (voltage, current, focus, travel speed).
  • Perform EB welds on precision aerospace components with tight dimensional and metallurgical tolerances.
  • Verify joint fit‑up, cleanliness, and material condition prior to welding.
  • Conduct in‑process monitoring of weld quality and adjust parameters as required.

Quality & Compliance

  • Perform work in compliance with AS9100, customer specifications, internal procedures, and special‑process requirements.
  • Complete required inspection documentation, travelers, and weld records accurately and in real time.
  • Support first‑article inspections (FAI), audits, and customer or regulatory reviews related to EB welding processes.
  • Identify and elevate non‑conformances; support root‑cause and corrective‑action activities.

Equipment & Process Control

  • Conduct routine machine checks, preventative maintenance tasks, and basic troubleshooting of EB welding equipment.
  • Maintain vacuum integrity, tooling, fixtures, and consumables in accordance with documented procedures.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering on process development, parameter optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Safety & Housekeeping

  • Follow all safety protocols related to high‑voltage equipment, vacuum systems, and material handling.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and audit‑ready work environment consistent with 5S and Lean practices.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3+ years of experience operating electron beam welding equipment in a precision manufacturing or aerospace environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, weld symbols, and work instructions.
  • Experience working under regulated quality systems (AS9100, ISO, NADCAP-style environments preferred).
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and process discipline.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs and work in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience welding aerospace alloys (titanium, Inconel, stainless steel, aluminum).
  • Familiarity with metallurgical principles, heat‑affected zones, and weld penetration profiles.
  • Experience supporting NDT inspection methods (e.g., FPI, radiography) related to EB weld validation.
  • Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement exposure.
  • Technical certification or formal training in EB welding or related special processes.
  • Prior experience using Cambridge Vacuum Engineering beam welding machine would be a distinct advantage.
