Position: Medical Lab Technician 8pm-6:30am, 7on/7off

Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for coordinating the workflow of phlebotomists in the Specimen Processing area, ensuring accurate and efficient transportation of lab supplies and specimens, and following regulatory guidelines for specimen handling. This role involves effective communication with NMHS staff, patients, and family members, providing excellent customer service, and addressing service recovery when needed.

The Technician plays a vital role in reporting accurate laboratory test results and maintaining quality control standards.

Supervision

The Medical Laboratory Technician reports to the Clinical Laboratory Manager and works collaboratively with the Pathology Department.

Job Functions
  • Coordinated workflow of phlebotomists in Specimen Processing area.
  • Distribution and Transportation:
    Assures accurate and efficient transportation of lab-related supplies, equipment and specimens.
  • Follows all laws and regulations in the processing and transportation of laboratory specimens.
  • Specimen Handling & Processing:
    Follows regulatory guidelines in handling/processing of laboratory specimens.
  • Follows proper policy for accurate patient identification and labeling of all specimens.
  • Communicates effectively with all NMHS staff, patients, their family members and customers.
  • Uses AIDET as applicable.
  • Attends CARES training.
  • When necessary, ensures proper service recovery for patients and/or caregivers.
  • Answers telephone in a polite and efficient manner.
  • Works as part of a team with all Pathology and NMHS employees.
  • Reporting/Recordkeeping:
    Assures department testing, applicable to their area, is reported accurately and timely.
  • Assists with meeting goals of department Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation of all required instrument monthly maintenance and quality control.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and expand skills.
  • Stays abreast of regulatory changes.
  • Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines.
  • Complies with appropriate Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guideline/regulations/laws/statutes.
  • Adheres to College of American Pathologist (CAP) & Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards.
Qualifications Education

Associate's Degree of Arts degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a CAHEA/NAACLS accredited program – Required.

MLTs credentialed prior to 2006 are grandfathered and do not have to complete the continuing education requirement – Required.

Medical Laboratory Scientist students in their fourth year of study who have successfully completed a clinical rotation may be hired into PRN MLT position – Required.

Licenses and Certifications

ASCP – Medical Technologist Certification required within 12 months after graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician Program – Required.

ASCP – Medical Technologist Certification preferable, other nationally recognized certifications accepted – Preferred.

Note:

If ASCP certification has recently lapsed, employee will have 90 days to complete continuing education and recertification requirements. If the credential has lapsed >10 years, the employee must retake the certification exam – Required.

DL NUMBER – Driver License, valid and in State – Required.

Work Experience

10+ years – Willing to consider 10 years of experience in a clinic or hospital laboratory in lieu of certification – Preferred.

  • Must reflect a positive, caring attitude toward clients, patients, staff and the public we serve – Required.
