Hourly rate: $38.06 - $49.48 per hour. Placement within the range is based on experience and internal equity.

Role Overview

The Mammography Technologist reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory and accreditation standards. The role includes providing mammography and DEXA imaging and patient care services at defined levels to patients.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain accountability for patient safety throughout the imaging process, including screening, preparation, monitoring, and post‑procedure care.
  • Produce diagnostic‑quality images using approved protocols and professional standards.
  • Apply professional judgment within approved protocols to optimize image quality and address imaging challenges.
  • Review images prior to exam completion and initiate corrective action when diagnostic adequacy is not met.
  • Administer contrast in accordance with policy, including screening for contraindications and patient monitoring as applicable.
  • Operate imaging equipment and maintain imaging room readiness.
  • Identify equipment performance issues and initiate follow‑up through established service processes.
  • Coordinate exam flow and prioritize time‑sensitive studies.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the medical record and image archive system, including exam set‑up, image routing, result availability and charging accuracy.
  • Adhere to organizational values, ethical standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Consistently uphold all applicable quality and safety standards within diagnostic imaging, such as radiation safety, MRI safety, and infection prevention measures to protect patients, visitors, and team members.
  • Ensure a positive patient experience throughout care delivery.
  • Support department initiatives to improve relationships, reliability, efficiency, and growth.
  • Perform breast screening exams, diagnostic mammograms, and bone density (DEXA) scans as needed.
  • Produce images that meet ACR image quality critique standards.
  • Provide patients with relevant educational materials.
  • Verify correct order for scheduled exams and align with previous recommendations prior to all exams.
  • Communicate with patients before the procedure to obtain history, explain risks and expected outcomes; communicate during the exam to monitor safety and comfort.
  • Prepare images and compile study for radiologist relaying all appropriate information.
  • Perform mammography quality control procedures and maintain records.
  • Assist with patient positioning, lifting, and transport to and from imaging areas as needed.
  • Support department with regulatory inspections and accreditations as needed.
  • May participate in training and onboarding of new team members.
Qualifications
  • Required: Graduate of an accredited radiology technologist program.
  • Required: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Mammography (M).
  • Required: Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) accreditation.
  • Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Preferred: One year of mammography technologist experience.
