Position Summary

Control, operate, or maintain machinery to generate electric power. Includes auxiliary equipment operators. Serves as an operator on shift (initially nights with opportunity to move to days) or as a relief operator; will be responsible for answering emergency calls and dispatching for all utilities after normal hours of operation.

Tasks
  • Monitor and inspect power plant equipment and indicators to detect evidence of operating problems.
  • Take readings from charts, meters and gauges at established intervals, and take corrective steps as necessary.
  • Control and maintain auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, feedwater heaters, filters, and chlorinators, to supply water, fuel, lubricants, air, and auxiliary power.
  • Open and close valves and switches in sequence upon signals from other workers, in order to start or shut down auxiliary units.
  • Record and compile operational data, completing and maintaining forms, logs, and reports.
  • Assists the Power Plant Maintenance Supervisor in maintenance tasks of boiler equipment, pumps, motors, valves, electrical components, piping and insulation.
  • Operates electric generators including gas-fired high-pressure steam boiler, combustion turbine as well as diesel powered units.
  • Uses Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Performs custodial duties, grounds maintenance and plant security.
  • Performs substation operations and maintenance.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures.
  • Responds logically to emergency conditions.
  • Regulate equipment operations and conditions such as water levels, based on data from recording and indicating instruments or from computers.
  • Start or stop generators, auxiliary pumping equipment, turbines, and other power plant equipment, and connect or disconnect equipment from circuits.
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain equipment such as generators, turbines, pumps, and compressors to prevent equipment failure or deterioration.
  • Adjust controls to generate specified electrical power, or to regulate the flow of power between generating stations and substations.
  • Place standby emergency electrical generators online in emergencies and monitor the temperature, output, and lubrication of the system. Receive outage calls and call in necessary personnel during power outages and emergencies.
  • Collect oil, water, and electrolyte samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Inspect records and logbook entries, and communicate with other plant personnel, to assess equipment operating status.
  • Operates system 69kv and 12kv breakers, as required.
  • Abides by all standards, conduct and policies, as stated in Personnel Policy Manual.
  • Deals with the public in a manner that positively promotes the image of the City and handles complaints tactfully.
  • All employees of the City of Winfield are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland security occurs. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities to his/her regular job responsibilities and incorporate other non-job-related duties as necessary and required of an employee. An employee’s response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over an extended period of time with infrequent breaks or rest periods.
