Corrections Officer (Part‑time and Full‑time). Salary starting at $18.55/hr.
Position SummaryUnder general supervision, performs duties related to the enforcement of federal, state, and county laws and ordinances in conjunction with the processing and care of County prisoners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Process incoming inmates, including searches, inventory of personal property, issuance of jail clothing, photographing, fingerprinting, and completion of the computer‑based booking program.
- Conduct searches of inmates and their clothing for contraband.
- Prepare and maintain logs and reports.
- Oversee inmates and maintain security, accountability, and control of inmates.
- Perform periodic shakedowns and monitor activities and well‑being of inmates.
- Inspect mail and personal property.
- Provide basic first aid and CPR; call for EMS and officer support in emergencies.
- Serve meals and ensure proper feeding and hygiene of inmates.
- Issue items from commissary.
- Assist in the transportation of inmates.
- Release and log out inmates for work release; check them in on return.
- Release inmates with Shift Supervisor approval after all required checks are completed and deemed accurate.
- Complete a variety of reports and documents.
- Receive and secure bonds; maintain records.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Kansas driver’s license.
- Minimum age 18 years or older by hiring date.
- No felony convictions.
- No convictions for domestic violence, stalking, or related offenses.
- Must be able to perform the physical duties of a Corrections Officer.
- Working knowledge of first aid.
- Ability to learn regulations regarding jails, confinement of prisoners, and prisoner care practices.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to perform a high level of sustained physical activity.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co‑workers, prisoners, and the public.
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma; some public contact experience is desirable.
Special Requirements- Good overall physical and mental condition to perform all statutory duties of a Corrections Officer.
- Ability to perform the physical functions of a Corrections Officer, including standing for long periods, responding to emergencies, using physical force to subdue or restrain inmates, operating gates and doors, lifting/carrying or assisting in evacuation of unconscious or unwilling inmates, crouching, climbing, kneeling, crawling, walking as necessary for searches, running up/down stairs, and dealing effectively with inmates upon arrival.
- Good vision to observe inmate activities.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in typing/keyboard use to write reports and enter data into a computer‑based inmate database.
- Ability to interact effectively and proactively in the adult correctional environment.
- Compliance with facility policies, procedures, General Orders, and Post Orders.
- Decision‑making based on facts and circumstances present at the time of an incident or event.
- Commitment to attend training to develop necessary skills.
