Corrections Officer II Description of Work

Under general supervision, performs duties related to the enforcement of federal, state, and county laws and ordinances in conjunction with processing and care of county prisoners.

• Process incoming inmates, including searches, inventory of personal property, issuance of jail clothing, photographing, fingerprinting, and completion of the computer‑based booking program.
• Conduct searches of inmates and their clothing for contraband, prepare and maintain logs and reports, and oversee inmates.
• Maintain security, accountability, and control of inmates: perform periodic shakedowns; observe and monitor inmate activities and well‑being.
• Inspect mail and personal property, provide basic first aid and CPR, call for EMS and officer support in emergencies.
• Serve meals and ensure proper feeding and hygiene of inmates.
• Issue items from commissary and assist in the transportation of inmates.
• Release inmates with shift‑supervisor approval, complete work‑release and return procedures.
• Complete reports and documents, receive and secure bonds, maintain records, and perform other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Kansas driver’s license.
• Minimum age 18 or older by hiring date.
• No felony convictions; no convictions for domestic violence, stalking, or related offenses.
• Must be able to perform the physical duties of a Corrections Officer.
• Working knowledge of first aid.
• Ability to learn regulations regarding jail confinement and prisoner care.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to perform a high level of sustained physical activity.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co‑workers, inmates, and the general public.

Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school; some experience involving public contact is desirable.

• Must possess good overall physical and mental condition to perform, with or without reasonable accommodations, all statutory duties and tasks of a Corrections Officer.
• Perform physical functions: stand for long periods; respond to emergencies and use force to subdue or restrain violent inmates as warranted by inmate actions or aggression.
• Operate gates and doors manually; lift, carry, or assist with evacuation of unconscious or unwilling inmates.
• Move as required: crouch, climb, kneel, crawl, walk; run up/down stairs and run distances to manage inmate situations immediately upon arrival.
• Have correctable and peripheral vision to observe inmate activities.
• Communicate effectively in verbal and written formats.
• Take effective action to properly manage incarcerated adults.
• Attend training to develop necessary skills for an effective Corrections Officer.
• Type and use keyboard to write reports and enter data into a computer‑based inmate database.
• Follow policies, procedures, General Orders, and post orders of the facility.
• Make decisions based on facts and circumstances present at the time of an incident or event and take action accordingly.
