Job Description
Special Education Teacher, Comprehensive Life Skills Classroom
  • Must hold the proper certification and endorsements as required by the State Board of Education. Qualifying License:
    Special K-12. Qualifying Endorsement:
    Generalist.
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Reports to Principal.
  • Candidates must have a commitment to life‑long learning and a willingness to actively participate in professional development and enhancing individual skill sets.
  • Staff must be solution‑focused, work effectively with colleagues, and have the aptitude for gathering data and analyzing that data to improve their effectiveness as a teacher. All new hires must have a capacity and a commitment to using and fostering technology.
  • Must have an unwavering commitment to the success of all students, as well as a dedication to meeting the differentiated needs of student groups, including special education, English Language Learners, and gifted students.
  • Strives to implement the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives, establishes clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicates these objectives to students.
  • Preferred experience developing support systems using assistive technology, coordinating related services and accessing community supports, teaching a self‑contained special education classroom, training in CPI or similar de‑escalation techniques, developing behavioral plans; able to plan curriculum, create lessons, and model best practice teaching methods; manage paraprofessional support; deliver core curriculum; lift at least 75 pounds; assist with toileting; administer Nevada Alternative Assessment.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs and abilities of students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation as requested by the immediate supervisor.
  • Identifies students with learning problems on a regular basis and seeks assistance from District specialists.
  • Assists the administration in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy; develops classroom behavior rules and procedures; maintains order in the classroom fairly and justly.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records and inventories as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents concerning academic and behavioral progress.
  • Provides availability to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day as required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
  • Cooperates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
  • Accepts a share of responsibility for co‑curricular activities if requested.
  • Provides for personal professional growth through ongoing reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
