Job Summary
This position is located in Winnemucca and serves as an underfill for Engineering Tech 3. It is a field‑level construction role that performs inspections, testing, surveying, and other field work to verify the contractor’s quantities of work so that contractors can be paid promptly.
Engineering technicians perform a broad range of duties involving technical engineering work in support of professional engineers. Responsibilities include drafting, engineering calculations, surveying, materials and soils testing, construction inspection, roadway design, right‑of‑way engineering, planning, permitting, water rights appropriation, and land acquisition. Work requires the application of technical engineering skills, methods, and practices in compiling data, drafting, using computer‑aided software, operating specialized equipment, and preparing engineering‑related documents.
EssentialQualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience involving public contact; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Assist engineers in performing field and laboratory tests, setting up equipment, gathering and compiling data, analyzing technical problems, conducting research, and ensuring data accuracy.
- Assist engineers, contractors, department staff, other agencies, the public and private business regarding water rights ownership, bid documents, contract plans, right‑of‑way plans, acquisition and disposal documentation, contract specifications, test results, and federal and state guidelines and procedures.
- Perform technical research to ensure department programs, testing methods, policies, and procedures comply with federal and state requirements; review technical documents, analyze and interpret data, and note discrepancies.
- Maintain records and contract documents, enter data into computer systems for analysis, and review construction, water rights and contract documents and plan specifications.
- Conduct field inspections of construction projects, well locations and water use, material equipment, property lines and boundaries, right‑of‑way mapping and safety barriers; perform field measurements and record data.
- Perform manual and computer‑aided drafting assignments, including maps, charts, graphs, tables, slopes, and contours for construction projects and right‑of‑way location.
- Conduct surveying work including staking alignments, structures, fence lines, cross sections, and topographical mapping using transits, levels, and computerized surveying equipment.
- Perform material and soil testing in a laboratory setting, including acceptance testing, design mix, proficiency and advanced testing.
- Maintain and calibrate equipment, document calibration results and repairs, and recommend repair or replacement.
- Research city, county, and federal records to determine property ownership, boundaries, encumbrances, and title condition.
- Perform calculations for government surveys, property boundaries, right‑of‑way lines, slopes, and contours, as well as construction limits and material quantities.
- Perform related duties as assigned under close supervision of a higher‑level technician or engineer.
- Knowledge of personal computers and related ancillary equipment.
- Skills in mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; work with frequent interruptions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and the public; follow oral and written instructions; convert mathematical data, quantities, and measurements; accurately copy, post, or transcribe data; perform repetitive work according to prescribed procedures; and gather and compile data.
