Position: SAFETY SPECIALIST, MINE SAFETY/HEALTH - DIR

Job Summary

The Department of Business and Industry’s Division of Industrial Relations is hiring a Safety Specialist in the Mine Safety and Training Section (MSATS) based in Winnemucca. Safety Specialists promote recognized safety and health practices among businesses subject to state safety regulations. They identify workplace hazards and regulatory violations, recommend reasonable and practical solutions to reduce risk and improve compliance, and respond to, investigate, and document accidents and fatalities.

The MSATS operates under Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) Chapter 512, which is intended to reduce the frequency and severity of mine accidents through safety and health training for miners and mine operators.

Essential Qualifications

Five years of technical, operational, or management experience in mines, mills, beneficiation plants, or smelters, at least one year spent working underground.

Job Duties
  • Conduct safety and health inspections pursuant to NRS 512.170 for surface and underground mines, mills, quarries, and related facilities, addressing areas such as ground control, fire prevention, ventilation, explosives, electrical safety, and personal protection.
  • Perform industrial hygiene surveys, air quality evaluations, noise dosimetry, hazardous materials handling checks, and material safety data sheet compliance.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to mine operators to comply with state and federal regulations and improve mine health and safety conditions.
  • Measure noise, dust, metal, and toxic materials, conduct electrical ground‑resistivity tests, and perform mine ventilation surveys where necessary.
  • Issue notices of violation, abatement orders, and prohibition orders when imminent danger is present.
  • Develop and deliver federally required training to mine operators and workers, including new miner, refresher, first aid, mine rescue, and instructor‑in‑structor programs.
  • Investigate mine accidents, inspect potential disaster sites, interview witnesses, prepare findings reports, recommend preventive procedures, issue closure orders, and testify at federal or civil proceedings.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of metal and non‑metal surface and underground mining processes, equipment, machinery, and associated workplace safety issues.
  • Ability to consult with mine operators, workers, and representatives to promote safe mining practices.
  • Physical stamina to conduct inspections that involve extended periods of walking over uneven, steep, or sloping terrain and climbing ladders or stairways.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to give oral presentations and prepare accurate technical reports.
  • Capability to work underground in confined spaces and in wet, dusty, and poorly illuminated environments.
