Under general supervision, maintains county roads and right of ways by performing a variety of manual tasks, operating light vehicles and road equipment; keeps records of work performed; and performs other work as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This Road Maintenance Worker is the entry or trainee level class for incumbents. Employees in this classification often work as part of a crew, are under direct supervision, and are gaining the skills needed to operate equipment and perform road maintenance responsibilities.

The Road Maintenance Worker II incumbents perform road construction work and operate equipment independently under general supervision.

The Lead Road Maintenance Worker provides directions to a crew(s) and acts as a job or project leader for staff and independently operates a variety of equipment.

Supervision Exercised and Received:

Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.

  • Performs an operational and safety check of the equipment before use; checks fuel and fluid levels, air pressures, hydraulic systems and lubrication points; performs lubrication of essential parts.
  • Operates a variety of construction equipment such as road graders, back hoes, pavers, sweepers and related equipment to cut roads, rough and finish road grades, make excavations, move earth, clear and construct drainage ditches, excavate trenches, load materials and perform similar work.
  • Drives a variety of trucks including tractor-trailers (belly dumps, tankers, transport), dump trucks, water trucks, and boot tankers.
  • Operates rollers, loaders, excavators, dozer, motor graders, asphalt pavers, chip spreaders, shouldering machines, and other heavy equipment as required.
  • Inspects job sites for potential hazards; ensures that appropriate traffic control and warning devices are properly placed and safety equipment is worn.
  • Installs, cleans and repairs cattle guards; installs, cleans and repairs culverts; patches potholes; repairs bridges.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on equipment; adjusts, lubricates, and replaces fluids on equipment; operates welders to repair broken equipment; checks for wear and for items needing repair, cleans equipment; cleans, sharpens and adjusts manual tools; cleans shop and other work areas.
  • May use a variety of power equipment such as air compressors, jackhammers, water pumps, sprayers, and asphalt grinders/saws.
  • Ensures that tools, equipment, safety devices and materials required for the job are loaded prior to moving to the job site.
  • Secures equipment upon completion of the work.
  • Maintains basic logs and records related to work performed.
  • Subject to emergency call-out response and standby assignment.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

    Knowledge of:
    • Basic computer operation.
    • Principles, methods and materials used in a variety of equipment, basic maintenance and repair work.
    • Safe work methods and regulations pertaining to road construction and equipment operation.
    • Company and department policy and procedures.
    Skill to:
    • Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Use tools, equipment, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Measure and calculate angles, lengths, and volumes.
    • Complete and maintain accurate records as assigned of work performed.
