Position: HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER 2 (BATTLE MOUNTAIN / WINNEMUCCA)

Job Summary

These positions are located in Winnemucca and surrounding areas in Nevada. Highway Maintenance Workers are certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation to operate a variety of highway maintenance and construction equipment to restore and maintain roadway surfaces, roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts, and ditches, and repair related appurtenances such as guardrails, markers, guideposts, and fences. Incumbents perform routine maintenance duties, including keeping pavement surface, shoulders, and clear zones in good repair, participate in summer betterment projects, and assist in emergency operations.

Positions require working in inclement weather and may require alternating shifts. The positions may be used for summer season employment not to exceed six months. Platform:
Highway Maintenance Worker II.

Essential Qualifications
  • One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work; or one year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker I in Nevada State service.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Willingness to work temporary (maximum six months) and alternate shifts as required.
  • Ability to provide a pre-employment screening for controlled substances and to submit for random drug testing.
Job Duties
  • Operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repair on a variety of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment such as rotary snowplow, motor grader, crawler/tractor, backhoe/grade-all, truck-mounted asphalt distributor, chip spreader, cold planer, paint stripper, vacuum sweeper, and culvert cleaner.
  • Act as designated certified operator for Highway Maintenance Worker I and II certification, demonstrate, oversee equipment operation and provide training in safety policies.
  • Install long line, solid, skip lines, gore lines and other permanent and temporary pavement markings.
  • Apply chip and flush seals, perform maintenance overlays, and mill and inlay with hot asphalt as needed; provide information for the Maintenance Management System and respond to customer service requests.
  • Establish traffic controls using accepted methods to reroute traffic or control speed and flow during maintenance, construction and accident scenes.
  • Mix salt and sand stockpiles, load salt and sand into trucks, apply anti-icing chemicals, remove snow with dump trucks, snow plows, spreaders, and pre-wetting equipment; operate motor graders; construct and maintain brine-making facilities.
  • Maintain radio contact with base station, maintenance personnel and law enforcement; use information from Intelligent Transportation System and District Operations Center; apply Incident Command System protocol and respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.
  • Install, repair and replace roadway signs, signposts, bulbs, fixtures, sensors on lighted sign structures, and overhead sign panels.
  • Monitor contract compliance and quality control, including testing of materials and completed work performed by contractors.
  • Maintain landscaped areas and highway right-of-way, repair, widen or reconstruct tree wells; replace dead or damaged trees, flowers, shrubs, and ground cover; fertilize, mow and reseed lawns.
  • Remove roadway and roadside debris, excess dirt, vegetation, and traffic hazards, including dead animals and biohazards.
  • Respond to accidents and fatalities and complete required forms and documentation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Continue training under supervision; progress to next level after one year of certification as a fully trained operator as designated by NDOT.
