Base pay range

$60,000.00/hr - $90,000.00/hr

North Shore Country Day School, a JK‑12 independent day school near Chicago, seeks a clinically trained individual to serve as our full‑time Middle School Counselor. This is a 10‑month/school year position, beginning with the 2026‑27 school year. North Shore is eager to consider applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities.

The successful candidate must be: clinically astute; collaborative; highly flexible; a self‑starter; creative; a strong written and oral communicator; and adept at working within multiple client systems.

The role of the Middle School Counselor involves a wide range of responsibilities including:

  • Individual and group counseling for students
  • Completion of risk assessments and safety plans for students experiencing emotional or behavioral crises. Coordination of follow‑up care
  • Collaboration and consultation with individual parents and parent groups
  • Collaboration and consultation with faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as with Learning Resources
  • Collaboration with Lower and Upper School counselors to ensure continuity of student support K–12
  • Provide faculty and parent programming during and outside of the school day
  • Collaboration with administrators on disciplinary guidelines and coordinated supports for students, including use of restorative practices
  • Help design, implement, and teach division‑wide SEL and wellness initiatives, including the middle school Advisory program
  • Classroom observations of students and guidance for teachers
  • Help design and implement community‑building programming for middle school students
  • Participation on the Student Support Team
  • Attendance/participation in weekly 6th, 7th, 8th grade team meetings
  • Attendance/participation in Division, School, and Counseling Department meetings
  • Referral to, and collaboration with, outside providers
  • Participation in extracurricular activities, field trips, and overnight trips
  • Supporting the overarching goals and objectives of the NSCD Counseling Program and the school as a whole
  • Participation in Divisional EDI initiatives, including facilitation of affinity and/or interest groups
  • Maintaining accurate documentation of counseling interactions through August Schools platform
  • Attending school community events (Morning Ex, divisional meetings, curriculum nights, assemblies, orientation programs, among others)
  • Counselors are also on‑call to provide support and/or crisis management to community members in the event of a need that arises in a different division, or during a local, national, or international crisis (such as a school shooting, etc.) that impacts the community

A minimum of a LCSW, LMFT, or LCPC is required for this position. Working in a school, or other related experience, is valued but not required. This is a 40+ hour/week position, 5 days/week. As we are a school that values lifelong learning, professional development is supported and encouraged.
