Position: Studio Art Instructor (Contract)

The Winnipeg Art Gallery – Qaumajuq (WAG-Qaumajuq) is one of Canada’s leading visual art museums and home to the world’s largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art. Reports to: Head of Education & Programs
Location: On-site, Winnipeg, MB
Rate of Pay: $510-$850 per 10 week
Schedule: Classes typically run weekday evenings for adults and weekend mornings/afternoons for children and teens. Each class ranges from 1–2.5 hours per week.
Start Date: As soon as possible

Position Summary

Studio Art Instructors are contracted to deliver engaging and educational art classes for children, teens, and/or adults. This role involves designing age‑appropriate programming, facilitating classes, and creating a positive, professional, and inspiring experience for all participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and plan course content in consultation with the Studio Coordinator.
  • Prepare a course outline, including a supply list.
  • Foster a learning environment that encourages creative expression and understanding of visual communication principles.
  • Manage classroom activities and maintain attendance records.
  • Coordinate with Studio Technicians for supply requests, kiln firings, and related needs.
  • Ensure safety by orienting students and volunteers to fire procedures and safe material handling.
  • Supervise studio clean‑up and maintain a professional environment.
  • Represent WAG‑Qaumajuq’s Studio Programs to the public in a positive manner.
  • Book models from the approved studio model list (if applicable).
  • Install children’s artwork in the Through the Eyes of a Child gallery (if applicable).
  • Uphold equity and anti‑racism principles through ongoing education, bias awareness, and application of organizational policies.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Fine Arts degree or diploma, or equivalent relevant experience in visual arts.
  • Previous instructional experience.
  • Expertise in one or more mediums: drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, digital photography (Lightroom/Photoshop), animation (Flipa Clip or Stop Motion Studio), digital drawing (Procreate), or pottery.
  • Current Child Abuse Registry Check.

Assets:

  • Working knowledge of an Indigenous language and/or French.
  • Current First Aid certification.
