Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Enrollment in a minimum level of Core 2 of the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) professional accounting program is required.
  • A University degree with a major in accounting, or a related discipline, is required.
  • Systems training in a computerized financial records environment would be an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of experience in an accounting-related position with knowledge of accounting theory and practice is required.
  • Sound knowledge of university policies and procedures, especially related to finance, is required.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying policies, procedures, and guidelines is required.
  • Experience with full-cycle accounting, budget oversight, and preparing financial reports is required, with experience in research accounting preferred.
  • Experience communicating financial information to non-financial staff is an asset.
  • Knowledge of University of Manitoba financial systems (i.e Aurora/FAST/Banner/Concur/EPIC/VIP) an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Key responsibilities

Maintenance and oversight of the Vice President (Research and International) and its reporting units/centres’ operating and income budgets

  • Budget and research fund maintenance of all reporting units in conjunction with Directors.
  • Prepares financial reports as requested by the Directors of VPRI. (eg. quarterly balances).
  • Performs quarterly salary maintenance, journal entries, and budget adjustments, submits to Director, Research Finance of VPRI for approval.
  • Prepares detailed reviews and summaries of the financial activities for the Directors and the Director, Research Finance of VPRI for review (e.g., Quarterly Operating Financial Review, Quarterly Salary Budget Maintenance).
  • Liaises with the Director, Research Finance on behalf of reporting units for budgetary, income, research fund, and financial matters, works with specified units to ensure expenditures are in line with the allocated budget and guidelines.
  • Prepares the University's Forecasting and Carryover exercises in conjunction with Units' and Centres' Directors, submits to the Director, Research Finance of VPRI for approval.
  • Provides information to the Directors about available funds for staffing and other ongoing expenditures.
  • Provides on-going oversight of all operating budgets making sure that all reporting units are adhering to the university policies.
  • Acts as an alternate signing authority for operating, income, and research fund budgets within the VPRI and its reporting units.
  • Prepares external invoices and journal entries for the VPRI offices.
  • Oversees interdepartmental charges with the reporting units.
  • Ensures maintenance of capital assets with reporting units.
