Job Description:Job Summary
The Financial Accountant is responsible for the maintenance, and validity of The Salvation Army's general ledgers, and associated sub-ledgers. They will prepare and process complex reconciliations and prepare major journal entries (both one-time and recurring in support of these functions). The Financial Accountant will be the prime person responsible for a designated set of ministry unit and client financial statements and be the prime contact for clients in the understanding and resolution of financial statement issues.
Where applicable, identify and recommend process improvement and document processes within their area of responsibility.
- Perform reconciliations on general and sub-ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Research and generate analytical and financial reports, including budgetary and cash flow reviews.
- Regularly review financial statements for accuracy, health indicators, and compliance with policy.
- Prepare required accruals and ensure proper classification of invoices as per policy.
- Initiate bank transfers, perform daily reconciliations, and ensure timely and accurate transaction processing.
- Ensure all transactions are supported by appropriate approvals and documentation before processing.
- Act as a primary contact for internal units and external clients, addressing accounting issues and providing solutions.
- Assist with budget preparation and provide detailed budget variance analysis to stakeholders.
- Communicate financial risks or issues of ministry units to the Senior Financial Accountant.
- Ensure tax rebates are claimed correctly and complete required charitable filings, including CRA T3010.
- Completion of university degree in Finance/ Accounting.
- Two (2) years of experience in an accounting/finance environment.
- CPA candidate preferred.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- High quality Excel spreadsheet skills for handling large volumes of data (function knowledge specific to VLookups and index/match, indirect, trims, left, right, mid, substitute, if statements [with or/and logic]).
- Excellent knowledge of Word.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills are a must.
The target hiring range for this position is $50,897.60 to $63,627.20 with a maximum of $76,356.80. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
