The Lead Hand supports the Maintenance Manager/Facility Manager and Mechanical Specialist by providing hands-on leadership, direction, and technical support to Maintenance Workers responsible for servicing and repairing Edison buildings and properties. This role oversees daily maintenance operations, preventive maintenance programs, and capital projects, including building rehabilitations and upgrades. Lead Hand provides day-to-day guidance to internal maintenance staff and supervises external contractors to ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, on time, and in accordance with company standards and contractual requirements.
Responsibilities- Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with legislated and company safety policies.
- Always prioritize the safety of staff and tenants.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions to the Safety Coordinator.
- Ensure staff are properly trained and follow safe operating procedures for tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
- Supervision & Operations
- Supervise Maintenance Technicians, General Labourers, and internal and external trades.
- Assign, schedule, and oversee work orders in a backup capacity for the Service Coordinator.
- Clearly communicate work expectations and follow up to ensure quality, completeness, and timeliness.
- Act as a backup to the Maintenance Manager when required.
- Maintenance & Asset Management
- Support the development and execution of preventive maintenance programs.
- Assist with operations and capital planning, including budgeting and scheduling.
- Obtain quotes for repairs and projects; coordinate contract services as required.
- Supervise contractors and subcontractors to ensure work meets quality, budget, timeline, and contractual standards.
- Identify tool and equipment needs and communicate purchasing requirements.
- Develop and maintain inspection schedules for mechanical systems (e.g., elevators, fire suppression systems) to ensure code compliance.
- Maintain accurate records of building assets and maintenance activities.
- Administrative & Reporting
- Use a smartphone for communication, work order updates, and reporting via company applications.
- Utilize the purchase order system to request supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Review and approve employee timesheets assigned.
- Provide ongoing direction, mentoring, coaching, and feedback to maintenance staff.
- Provide input into performance management and disciplinary processes, as required.
- Minimum 3-4 years of experience working with building systems and regulations, including 2 years in a supervisory role within residential property operations and/or facility operations.
- Strong technical knowledge in one or more trades, such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, or related building maintenance trades.
- 3rd Class Power Engineering Ticket (required).
- Experience with Yardi or similar property management software is considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours during peak operational periods.
- Participation in an on-call rotation as required.
- Physical ability to stand or walk for extended periods and lift up to 50 kg.
