Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING

REQUIRED:

  • Undergraduate Degree in a related discipline is required.
  • Post-Secondary Education (i.e. Business Administration, Management, Trades) is preferred.
  • Sound knowledge of all aspects of custodial and ice-making operation and pool maintenance including, cleaning chemicals and mechanical cleaning equipment is required.
  • Sound knowledge of the CSA B52 Mechanical Refrigeration code, Power Engineers act, and the Provincial Health act is also required.
  • Must be certified as a Pool Operator and have a Power Engineering Certificate in Refrigeration.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years of directly related experience in facility management/supervision is required.
  • Must have solid supervisory/leadership experience which includes coordinating and supervising the work of others, maintaining productivity and staff morale, recruitment, training and performance management.
  • Experience working in a pool and/or arena and ammonia plants is required.
  • Previous experience supervising in a unionized environment is preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must demonstrate effective communication (verbal and written) and excellent analytical, organizational interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff, the University community at large and visitors to the campus.is required.
  • Demonstrated abilities to problem solve, exercise judgement and make sound independent decisions required.
  • Must be receptive to and adapt to change and be willing to promote new ideas and techniques.
  • Must be able to maintain and compile accurate records, estimates and reports.
  • Must be willing to adjust their schedule to respond to emergency needs.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
Key responsibilities
  • Assist the Manager, Caretaking Services in gathering and analyzing data and identifying, planning, directing and implementing Long Term Strategic Planning for the department.
  • Assist with managing a budget for salaries of staff and order supplies, distribute and control levels of supplies.
  • Assist the Manager in preparing and control of annual budget, including preparation of request for purchase of equipment.
  • Prepare estimates for projects, requisitions, special events as requested.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies, methods, and equipment related to their area of responsibility.
  • Work closely with suppliers and external groups for the purpose of acquiring information to resolve operational problems and to provide optimum service and efficiency.
  • Make recommendations, initiate the purchasing of equipment and supplies.
  • Keep equipment inventory current and advise the Manager of any changes.
  • Regularly deal with staff problems and lead staff meetings.
  • Direct staff and make necessary staffing changes due to absenteeism, vacations and emergencies.
  • Hire and select staff, interview applicants and select the successful candidate.
  • Works closely with the Manager in implementing job training programs for new and existing employees, ensures the proper and safe use of materials and equipment.
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals and absenteeism review meetings, recommend staff for the Attendance Management Program.
  • Authorize and schedule vacations, overtime and the scheduling of additional custodial resources to meet the need of the departments.
  • Address performance concerns, identify and implement the necessary remedial measures and apply progressive discipline upon consultation with Manager.
