Job Summary

Joining the Board of Directors means bringing rigor, creativity, and innovation to this Canadian charity dedicated to serving children globally. This volunteer role carries legal and ethical responsibility for TPOP’s activities and includes leading the board finance committee. The treasurer is responsible for monitoring the organization's financial performance, ensuring we are on track with our budget and financial goals. This is a three-year term.

Treasurer

Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Governance
  • Participate in shaping TPOP’s mission, vision, and strategic planning.
  • Advise on policies related to nonprofit governance and compliance with financial regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Lead the board finance committee and attend board meetings.
  • Contribute to the financial sustainability of the organization by supporting strategic fundraising efforts.
Financial Oversight
  • Contribute to budgeting, financial planning, and risk assessment.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the board, keeping them informed about the charity's financial health and any potential issues.
  • Ensure that appropriate financial controls and procedures are in place to safeguard TPOP’s assets and maintain financial integrity.
  • Issue charitable donation receipts and ensure year-end tax return is filed with the CRA.
Board Culture & Expectations
  • The board collaborates closely with the CEO, consultants, and operational volunteers. The treasurer, specifically, will collaborate with the finance team and bookkeeping contractor.
  • Members commit to open, respectful dialogue and constructive decision-making.
  • All board members must attend governance training and comply with TPOP policies.
  • Time Commitment: 12 - 15 hours per month, including twice-monthly virtual meetings.
  • Term: 3-year term.
  • Financial Contribution:
    Board members from developed nations are encouraged to contribute $1,000 annually (through direct donations or fundraising efforts). Contributions from members in developing nations will be adjusted based on local economies.
  • Signing policies:
    Required for all board members, and includes but is not limited to Responsibilities & Ethics, Non Disclosure, Child Protection & Code of Conduct.
Requirements and Skills
  • Background in accounting, financial services, or relevant fields.
  • Excellent communication and people skills.
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills.
  • Experience with and ability to consolidate and interpret financial data and present findings.
  • Working knowledge of Quickbooks, MS Office, MS Word, MS Excel and other databases.
Knowledge / Experiential Assets
  • Public expenditure policies and general administrative policies.
  • Canadian charity law and research grant administration.
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Prior Board and/or not-for-profit service.
  • International development sector.
