Position Overview
We are seeking friendly and dependable English Language Partners to support newcomers by providing informal conversation practice and sharing helpful information about life in Winnipeg and Canada. This volunteer role is a great opportunity to help newcomers improve their English skills in a welcoming environment—either online or in person.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Meet online or in person with your Language Partner for informal conversation sessions.
- Assist with basic grammar, vocabulary building, and pronunciation.
- Provide encouragement and support to help build confidence.
- Share general information about Winnipeg, including community events, activities, schools, and transportation.
- Offer insights about Canadian life, culture, and customs.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Have resided in Canada (preferably Winnipeg) for at least three years.
- Knowledgeable about Winnipeg and its communities.
- Fluent in English with a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 8 or equivalent.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong time management and organization skills.
- Patience and understanding.
- For online sessions, experience using Zoom is required.
Skills Gained / Related Careers
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment
- Approximately 1.5 hours per week.
- Minimum commitment of three months.
- One meeting per week is required.
- Weekday evenings (after 4:30 p.m.) and Saturdays.
Time Commitment Options:
Daytime, Evening, Weekend, Remote Volunteering, Flexible Hours.
Online sessions take place via Zoom. In-person meetings occur at the Immigrant Centre or off-site at public locations such as libraries or coffee shops. Volunteers who wish to meet off-site must provide a Police Record Check.
