Under the supervision of an Entomology Technician 1 or Entomology Technician 2, the Technical Assistant – Entomology performs semi‑technical work in the field of entomological research and insect pest management including surveying, collecting, identifying, and preserving insect specimens. The Technical Assistant also responds to public inquiries concerning pest biology and control.
As The Technical Assistant – Entomology You Will- Survey, collect, identify, and preserve insect specimens to monitor insect pest populations.
- Respond to public inquiries concerning pest biology and control.
- Record survey and treatment data using GIS mapping and database software to meet permit requirements.
- Assist in the evaluation of insecticides and equipment using analytical equipment and methods, both in the field and laboratory, to monitor insecticide efficacy.
- Monitor ground squirrel populations on athletic fields and control them using Insect Pest Management (IPM) techniques.
- Completion of a minimum one year in the sciences from a recognized university or technical college such as anatomy, physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, micro/organisms, animal and plants.
- Experience using GIS software or similar software is preferred.
- Ability to navigate throughout the City of Winnipeg using maps (familiarity with City streets).
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to collect and maintain accurate field data and records.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with diverse groups including the public.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions and regulations applicable to the positions area of work.
- Ability to stay organized and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Ability to use computers/tablets/smart phones.
- Knowledge of insect identification is preferred.
