Duties

📣 The Arctic Fisheries and Marine Mammal Science Division, Arctic Region of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is based at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Division provides information and advice to support the management of Arctic fisheries resources, their habitat and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and on the Yukon North Slope. Successful management and conservation of these resources depends on acquiring, interpreting and sharing biological information, the processes affecting them and the ecosystem of which they are part.

🎯 Challenges of the position:

  • To enhance DFO-Science’s ability to provide science advice for the Cumberland Sound Turbot Management Area and NAFO SA 0 + 1, specifically to complete sclerochronology and growth studies for Greenland Halibut, and improve age estimation techniques using mineralogical methodologies for Cumberland Sound, NU.
Work environment

🛠️ Candidates of the program will work at Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Regional office – the Freshwater Institute, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.🛠️ Candidates will also have contact with members of the Hunters and Trappers Organizations and non‑governmental organizations in the presentation of information leading to advice for fisheries managers.

  • 📚 Currently enrolled or willing to enroll in a MSc. program (Biological Sciences or Earth Sciences programs) and accepted into the program by May 1, 2026 at the University of Manitoba following the Faculty of Graduate Studies admission requirements.
  • 📌 Experience working within a laboratory on inorganic mineral or calcified structures (i.e. otolith, fins, scales, teeth and minerals or rocks).
