Job Profile

The Parks Inventory Technical Assistant is responsible for capturing and recording park asset data throughout the City of Winnipeg’s Parks and Open Spaces, providing a critical role in the ongoing development and maintenance of the Parks Inventory asset registry and related Asset Management and Data Science programs.

As the Parks Inventory Technical Assistant you will:

  • Read digital maps and static maps to efficiently navigate from park to park, throughout the city.
  • Interpret ortho imagery (air photos) to locate one’s self within a park
  • For every park in the city: verify asset conditions, locations, new assets with adding attributes, capture photos of all assets & capture photos of the general park area
  • Review data capture - scrutinize location/geometry/attribute data at the end of each day in the office, update data as needed.
  • Provide assistance with any other Asset Management and Data Science project or program (including GIS work, filing, cataloging or research) to be accomplished on inclement weather days.
  • Provide assistance as required in support of Parks and Open Space program delivery.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Successful completion of 1st year of post-secondary education in geography, geomatics, land use planning, environmental design, civil engineering technology or another related field.
  • Previous experience with the City of Winnipeg Parks Inventory and GIS software, or experience with similar asset inventory registry would be an asset.
  • Good organizational skills with a demonstrated high attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with diverse groups including the public.
  • Good knowledge of City geography (streets and neighborhoods within the City of Winnipeg) with the ability to navigate throughout the City of Winnipeg using maps.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret ortho imagery (air photos), static and digital maps.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technology and database software.
  • Successful completion (or be willing to obtain within a specified timeframe) the following courses:
    • First Aid
    • WHMIS/GHS
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to collect and maintain accurate data and records.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
