Canvasback Annual-Cycle Movement Ecology & Productivity Research

Location:

Continental and SW Manitoba Parkland Habitat

Dr. Ben Sedinger – University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point
Dr. Jay Von Bank, Dr. Todd Arnold, & Dr. Frank Rohwer – Delta Waterfowl Foundation

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Delta Waterfowl and the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point are seeking a motivated M.S. student to lead a research project focused on validating geolocator technology using GPS/GSM transmitters on nesting female Canvasbacks in southwestern Manitoba. While geolocators are a cost-effective method of tracking broad movement patterns, validation of general movement areas has not been conducted in Canvasbacks. GPS/GSM transmitters provide fine-scale locations with superior accuracy, and can provide inference into the actual locations used by canvasbacks throughout the annual cycle while validating geolocation technology.

This work will provide the first annual-cycle validation of geolocator accuracy for the species and represents a critical step in improving large-scale movement and survival inference. The Manitoba field effort will include deployment and tracking of approximately 30 GPS/GSM units per year on nesting females, integrating telemetry data with geolocator estimates across the full annual cycle.
