Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • BSc in Microbiology is required.
  • MSc in Microbiology is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 2 years working in a microbiology lab is preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have experience working with Rhizobium as well as isolating the bacteria from nodules.
  • Ability to carry out routine microbiological techniques is required.
  • Able to carry out experiments and communicate the results to the PI is required.
  • Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy is required.
  • Must have ability to use Oxford Nanopore Sequencing.
  • Familiarity with Rhizobium Genomics is required.
  • Familiarity with constructing sequencing banks is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
Key responsibilities
  • Inoculate and maintain bean plants, and re-isolation of Rhizobium from root nodules, and in vivo nitrogenase assays
  • Carry out Rhizobium and Plant growth promoting bacterial competition experiments in non-sterile soil as well as assaying for plant growth promotion
  • Isolating genomic DNA and carrying out whole genome sequencing using Oxford Nanopore system
  • Preparing growth medium and sterilizing media components
  • Organizing data and lab book as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned.
