Job ProfileUnder the general supervision of the Foreman/Lead Mechanic, the Mechanic performs a variety of duties related to servicing, repairing, overhauling, rebuilding, testing, inspecting and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. The incumbent submits reports, records, and ensures safety procedures are followed.
Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, lubrication, adjustments, etc. on all types of vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose by testing, operating or inspecting to ensure the problem diagnosed is correct.
- Disassemble, assemble and prepare tasks, including selection of methods, tools, equipment and materials, and perform necessary repairs on all types of vehicles, equipment and component parts, including tire repairs and balancing.
- Read and interpret drawings, blueprints or schematics to estimate material and time to complete tasks, fabricate, inspect material, components and workmanship for defects.
- Test equipment, components and materials of completed repairs to approve or reject and document test results.
- Operate various types of mechanical, welding, and tire equipment, hand tools, and facility equipment.
- Respond to emergent situations, customer service requests and complaints.
- Operate, clean and maintain various types of vehicles/equipment.
- Write and maintain reports and records.
- Assist in training new employees by example.
- Maintain equipment yards and buildings as required.
- Maintain cooperative working relations.
- Ensure established safety rules and regulations are practiced for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public, property and equipment.
- Perform related duties consistent with the classification, including proper operation, cleaning and maintenance of any assigned vehicle, reporting irregularities, retrieving misplaced materials, working overtime, various shifts and different repair facilities as required.
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned, including junior classifications.
- Approximately five (5) years of current and directly related experience repairing heavy‑duty equipment or truck transport equipment complemented with a Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance, diagnosis, inspection, overhaul, repair, rebuild, modification, installation and testing of heavy‑duty/truck transport equipment.
- Valid Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate is preferred.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work in a team setting.
- Experience in basic Arc and Acetylene welding is preferred.
- Experience in vehicle and equipment air conditioning with valid MOPIA certification.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for mechanic shops and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
- Proficiency at sourcing and retrieving maintenance information electronically and online.
- Applicant with education outside of Canada must have education comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada and provide an official academic assessment report.
- Legal eligibility to work in Canada and maintain a valid work permit if applicable.
- Must have Red Seal Certification (Interprovincial Status) as a Heavy‑Duty Equipment Technician or as a Truck and Transport Mechanic.
- Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License, with ability to obtain Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months.
