Position: Excavator Operator - Civil Construction (Underground Utilities)

Position Overview

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators (up to 45T) for trenching, backfilling, and general excavation
  • Install and expose underground utilities safely (water, sewer, storm)
  • Work around live utilities with proper clearances and spotting procedures
  • Follow grade stakes, plans, and direction from supervision/grade personnel
  • Load trucks, handle materials, and assist with site prep as required
  • Conduct daily pre-use inspections and basic machine maintenance
  • Maintain situational awareness and safe working distances from other equipment
  • Communicate clearly with ground crew, spotters, and supervisors
  • Requirements and Experience

  • Minimum 3+ years excavator experience in civil or underground work
  • Experience digging around utilities (hydro, gas, water/sewer)
  • Experience with machines up to 45T
  • Ability to read grade stakes and construction drawings
  • Strong knowledge of safe excavation practices and hazard awareness
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Safety tickets (CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid, Ground Disturbance) considered an asset.
  • Strong awareness of site safety and hazard recognition.
  • Follow directions that are spoken or given by hand signals.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to lift and work with materials weighing up to 25kg.
  • Able to sit for long period of time in cramped spaces.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and environments.
  • Must have a strong understanding of industrial safety procedures and policies.
  • Must be fluent in English, both written and verbal.
  • Candidates may be required to complete a pre-employment Drug & Alcohol screen and/or criminal record check.
