Position: Excavator Operator - Civil Construction (Underground Utilities)

Key Responsibilities

Operate excavators (up to 45T) for trenching, backfilling, and general excavation

Install and expose underground utilities safely (water, sewer, storm)

Work around live utilities with proper clearances and spotting procedures

Follow grade stakes, plans, and direction from supervision/grade personnel

Load trucks, handle materials, and assist with site prep as required

Conduct daily pre-use inspections and basic machine maintenance

Maintain situational awareness and safe working distances from other equipment

Communicate clearly with ground crew, spotters, and supervisors

Requirements and Experience

Minimum 3+ years excavator experience in civil or underground work

Experience digging around utilities (hydro, gas, water/sewer)

Experience with machines up to 45T

Ability to read grade stakes and construction drawings

Strong knowledge of safe excavation practices and hazard awareness

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Safety tickets (CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid, Ground Disturbance) considered an asset.

Strong awareness of site safety and hazard recognition.

Follow directions that are spoken or given by hand signals.

Proven ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced setting.

Ability to lift and work with materials weighing up to 25kg.

Able to sit for long period of time in cramped spaces.

Ability to work in all weather conditions and environments.

Must have a strong understanding of industrial safety procedures and policies.

Must be fluent in English, both written and verbal.
