Monday to Friday 8:00 am - 4:15 pm

Salary: $42.01 to $49.36 per hour ($84,650.15 to $99,460.40 per annum)

Trial/Probation period: 840 hours worked

Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Red Seal Certification in electrical or fire suppression required.
  • CFAA Registered Fire Alarm Technician designation with an 'M' License issued by the office of the fire commissioner would be considered.
  • Valid class 5 driver's license is required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory and project management experience is required.
  • The successful candidate will possess thorough knowledge of the trades under their supervision, including but not limited to fire alarm systems and wet/dry sprinkler systems.
  • Demonstrated work experience and extensive knowledge regarding life safety systems, including comprehensive familiarity with applicable codes and standards including but not limited to NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 101, CFAA guidelines, and City of Winnipeg Fire Prevention By-laws, and a broad understanding of the operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of life safety systems.
  • The successful candidate is knowledgeable regarding building construction practices and systems, including mechanical, life safety, structural, and ventilation systems, as they relate to new construction, maintenance, and repair work.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written required.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills in dealing with a variety of situations, be decisive, unbiased and have the ability to make impartial decisions.
  • Must be capable of planning, organizing, directing, integrating, co‑ordinating a large staff and budget to meet the unit’s goals.
  • Must also have the ability to analyse and solve problems, adhere to procedures, policies and ensure compliance with union contracts.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with the ability to compile and maintain accurate computerized reports and records are required. Must have proficiency with MS Excel, Word and Outlook (email).
  • Physical ability to check the physical operation of the entire campus (various work locations) and recognize potential mechanical problems is required.
  • Must be physically able to work on roofs (heights), within crawlspaces/confined spaces, and in heat stress areas.
  • Ability to provide and assist in work scheduling, inspections and preventative maintenance planning as well as emergency work planning is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

    Must be able to obtain a City of Winnipeg Contractor license, if eligible under qualifications.
Key Responsibilities

Management

  • Plans daily work schedules and prioritize work orders including seasonal activities.
  • Issues work orders for maintenance and emergency work and coordinates in a proper response time.
  • Arranges for shut down of building services to facilitate major repairs.
  • Organizes staff vacations to maintain adequate staff coverage.
  • Maintains records of staff vacations, sickness and other leaves.
  • Authorize and allocates overtime to staff on an equally distributed basis.
  • Discusses unusual personnel problems and those with long term or widespread implications with staff and/or Manager, or Director.
  • Conducts monthly safety shop meetings.
  • Advises staff of proper safety procedures.
  • Ensures that equipment and hand tools are used properly and by authorized personnel only.
  • Ensures that safe staff work procedures are followed.
  • Reviews proper safety precautions with shop staff.
  • Ensures compliance with all University of Manitoba’s policies and procedures specifically with safe handling of asbestos, lock out/tag out equipment, working with hazardous materials, fall protection, W.H.M.I.S., confined entry, etc.
  • Inspecting the work done by their staff in the shop and on site and provide technical direction to trade’s personnel.
