School Bus Mechanic - Red Seal
The Transportation Section is part of the Secretary-Treasurer's Department and is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of 100 Division-owned school buses, including routing, scheduling, bus maintenance, and the recruitment, monitoring performance and training of all bus drivers, in accordance with the Division Policy and the Public Schools Act.
Under the direction of the Manager of Transportation, the Red Seal Bus Mechanic is responsible for the daily maintenance and repair of Winnipeg School Division buses. The mechanic will perform mechanical duties as required to ensure all vehicles are maintained in a safe mechanical condition.
Key Responsibilities- Under general supervision, work in the shop and on the road in the case of bus breakdowns
- Perform repairs, preventative maintenance services and inspections on buses and equipment
- Repairing, rebuilding, remodelling, assembling, installing, welding, diagnosing and overhauling of school buses
- Performing preventative maintenance and repair in accordance with regulations governing the Province of Manitoba including but not limited to:
- electrical diagnostic/repair, welding, glass replacement, major and minor component repair/replacement, engine tuning, tire repair, road tests, vehicle safety inspection certifications and stickers, grease jobs and oil changes
- Review and complete repairs identified in bus inspection reports
- Perform diagnosis of engine, brake, electrical components of buses and identify parts for repairs and maintenance
- Attendance at in-services and workshops provided by Winnipeg School Division and Department of Education as required
- Valid certification as Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Truck Mechanic from an accredited apprenticeship program
- Minimum of three years of related experience
- Proficient in diagnosing, servicing and repairing mechanical and electrical problems
- Vehicle Inspection experience and certification as a School Bus Inspector is preferred
- Personally owned hand tools are also required
- Proficiency in the application and use of diagnostic engine, ABS brake, automatic transmission and dashboard diagnostic software an asset
- Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License is required
- Knowledgeable in basic Microsoft computer skills including email and outlook
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Proven teamwork and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with staff
