Salary

Pay or shift range: $36.33 USD to $53.03 USD. The estimated range is the budgeted amount for this position. Final offers are based on factors such as skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and other job‑related reasons.

Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a health care professional who is skilled in all aspects of the nursing process. They are adaptable to the myriad of needs of the individual and family during health and illness. The RN is responsible and accountable for the delivery of individualized nursing care to patients having surgical interventions and for the direction of staff members assigned to them.

Responsibilities
  • Perform the RN advanced understanding of the Nursing Practice Process including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the surgical patient care, meeting physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs, and ensuring documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Act as a resource to other team members.
  • Keep updated on current surgical nursing practice, medications, and legal issues.
  • Follow best practice recommendations including AORN, AST, Perioperative Guidelines and organization‑wide policies and procedures; work closely with the surgeon while recognizing surgeon preferences.
  • In coordination with the surgical team, assemble the necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for the surgical procedure; check that all equipment functions properly; notify charge nurse and/or OR Product Coordinator of defects; remove defective equipment; label and document defects.
  • Conform to the Nurse Practice Act and provide safe and effective care to a myriad of surgical patients, taking precautions as warranted.
  • Perform the following (see details below):
    • Demonstrate understanding of surgical procedures.
    • Apply and monitor aseptic technique throughout the intra‑operative period.
    • Act as a scrub/circulating nurse during the intra‑operative procedure and document intra‑operative care.
    • Assist anesthesia staff during the peri‑operative period.
    • Recognize when a patient is in crisis and initiate an emergency action.
    • Perform sponge/needle/instrument counts and properly care for equipment.
    • Monitor patients with sedation for procedures and follow recommended infection control procedures.
  • When acting as Charge:
    • Assess patients, problem‑solve and facilitate nursing care.
    • Ensure adequate staffing for the current and following day.
    • Delegate unit tasks to appropriate staff and verify completion.
    • Ensure staff manage time wisely.
    • Assign staff during emergency situations (codes, disasters, etc.) and support departmental policies.
    • Inform the Director or designee of occurrences/incidents promptly.
    • Maintain efficient case flow and adjust staffing as needed.
    • Perform quality assurance testing for department‑specific equipment (defibrillator, MH cart, crash cart, glucometer).
    • Know changing acuity levels and direct physicians to most acute needs.
    • Act as the triage nurse and communicate with physicians and staff about add‑on cases or imperative information.
    • Report malfunctioning equipment promptly.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Skills and Experience

Required:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • BLS Certification
  • RN License in Minnesota
  • Basic computer skills:
    Microsoft Word, Outlook, Cerner.

Preferred:

  • One year of general nursing experience.
