Position Overview:
The Director of Surgery is accountable for the leadership and management functions of the surgical departments and for departmental operational performance including but not limited to the Pre-Anesthesia Area (PAA), the Operating Rooms (ORs), the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the Endoscopy Suite, and Sterile Processing. The Director of Surgery will organize, delegate, support, and facilitate activities within the assigned departments/services. They will support physicians, nursing, and all other caregivers within each service and will maintain an active presence and availability.
The Director will develop and maintain positive relationships and interactions. They will enhance physician/provider, patient, and caregiver satisfaction as well as continuous systems improvement initiatives. The Director will work with the leadership team, medical staff, and others to address clinical opportunities and respond to concerns that are impacting growth opportunities. The Director of Surgery is accountable for the fiscal management/financial stewardship and forecasting for surgery.
They manage the human resources aspect of the departments including performance management, competencies, and workplace safety. They are responsible for the stewardship of resources for surgery within the context of the Winona Health Services (WHS) mission. The Director of Surgery is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. They are responsible for the overall operation of the surgery program and will evaluate new procedures, equipment, and techniques in collaboration with surgery caregivers.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Has an advanced knowledge of the Nursing Practice Process including assessment, implementation, planning, and evaluation of patient care.
- Ensures that patient safety, quality, and the patient experience are the focus of the delivery of patient care. Remains patient-centric at all times.
- Uses technology for innovation in all operational aspects and works to find technological solutions to support work within the surgery departments.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, continuous systems improvement initiatives, safety management, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Ensures that staff adhere to departmental and WHS policies and procedures.
- Investigates and follows-up on patient concerns and engages medical, surgical, and anesthesia caregivers in ways to improve practice based on findings.
- Coordinates and collaborates with the leadership team, physicians, and caregivers on clinical and operational issues and engages all stakeholders in the development of improved processes and systems.

Skills and Experience:
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Current MN RN License
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Minimum of 5 years of surgery department experience
- Minimum of 3 years of management experience
- Knowledge of and experience in surgery business operations and leadership is required
- Demonstrated ability to lead and effectively plan, organize, and manage resources
- Strong communication and relationship building skills to develop team members
- Computer

Word, Excel, Outlook, and Patient Information Database (Cerner)
Preferred:
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Business, or related field is preferred
