Engineer - Watkins 1.0 FTE, 80 hours per pay period Hours are typically scheduled from 7:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with flexibility needed to work outside of those hours on occasion.
After successful orientation, the position will function as a 0.5 FTE Watkins Engineer and a 0.5 FTE Boiler Maintenance Apprentice. The apprentice component is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for potential future Boiler Engineer positions, subject to organizational needs and qualifications.
Position Overview:
The Watkins Engineer provides boiler operation and maintenance services at the Winona Health Watkins Manor in Winona with some occasional work on the main campus. Duties include operation of and maintenance work on boilers, air handling units, air conditioners, pumps, pneumatic control systems, minor electrical work, door and cabinet locks, and general facility maintenance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Operates boilers, air handling units, chillers, generators, and other pieces of equipment found in the facilities plants.
- Performs repairs and/or operates on the above equipment plus beds, wheelchairs, electrical repairs, minor plumbing repairs, ice machines, pumps, and refrigeration equipment.
- Grounds Care that includes but not limited to landscaping, seasonal duties such as winterizing and snow removal.
- Monitors fire alarms, security systems, and conducting regular safety inspections to protect and assist residents.
- Coordinates and oversees specialized contractors for repairs.
- Assist nursing caregivers on occasion & assisting with resident move in/out procedures, including inspections, apartment readiness and specific repairs.
- Effectively communicates both verbally and through written or typed documentation.
- Completes work orders, preventative maintenance (PM) reports and other documentation in a complete and timely manner. Communicates necessary information to team members and Director as necessary.
- Must be a member of the Assistance Needed Team and Fire Response Team at Winona Health
- Maintains an organized and clean environment and work area and is responsible for cleaning of a portion of mechanical spaces.
- Completes necessary educational requirements. Completes course work and other requirements necessary to obtain/retain licensure requirements of the position. Attends staff meetings and completes educational requirements of Winona Health caregivers

Skills and Experience:
Required:
- Candidate must obtain Special Boiler license within 90 days able to obtain a 1-C license within 3 years.
- Ability to work independently, meticulously and able to troubleshoot issues with Florence House & Manor House structures and work with Winona Health facility experts.
- Basic computer skills. Word. Outlook.
- Valid Driver's License
Preferred:
- EPA Refrigeration License
- HVAC experience helpful
- Building automation
- Experience in facilities or construction trades
Physical Demands:
Heavy Work:
Work activities that require lifting 35-50# frequently and occasionally 50-100# and 100# rarely. Work activities that require push/pull forces with 100# frequently and 200# rarely. Heavy work activities generally exceed the physical demands for the medium category of work activities.
Physical Requirements:
- May lift frequently up to 50# and rarely 100#
- May complete patient/resident handling moving or positioning with situations that safe patient handling equipment is not available
Work Environment:
Works inside and outside, at times in extreme conditions. Responds frequently to maintenance needs across the organization, including off campus facilities in Winona. Participates in providing security and code responses.

Scheduled work hours are typically Monday – Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility needed. Off hours and weekend required as needed to meet the needs of the department and Winona Health.
