Position Summary

The Biology adjunct instructor teaches the lecture for a course in the Biology program, preparing and delivering in-person learning activities designed to achieve course outcomes. Specifically, this position is needed to teach the lecture portion of Principles of Biology, an introductory course in biology for non-majors, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00-9:20 am for the Fall 2026 Semester.
In consultation with the Biology Laboratory Coordinator, who will teach the lab component of the course, the adjunct instructor will develop course materials, including a syllabus, homework assignments, and content for the Course Management System (CMS). They will evaluate and grade students’ class work, online work, assignments, and examinations and hold a minimum of two regularly-scheduled office hours per week throughout the semester.
They must maintain and submit student attendance records, grades and other required documentation by specified deadlines, as well as prepare and maintain course materials within the Salem College CMS for each course taught and communicate with enrolled students and the Laboratory Coordinator through a Salem email account. Additionally, they will participate in periodic meetings with one or more members of the Biology program faculty.

  • Prepares and maintains course material on the Salem College CMS
  • Communicates with enrolled students and the Laboratory Coordinator through the use of a Salem email account

Participates in periodic meetings with one or more members of the Biology program faculty

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in Biology or related discipline with at least 18 graduate-level course hours in a biological science
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written and interpersonal) and organizational skills
  • Sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of the community
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience teaching classes in Biology at the undergraduate or graduate level as instructor of record
  • Experience in instructional technology
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, or equivalent
Physical Functions

While performing the responsibilities of the course instructor, the employee is required to sit for varying lengths of time; bend, reach, lift, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; occasionally stand and walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard; perform extended periods of work at a computer workstation and view a computer monitor;

perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and work in a classroom setting.
