Position Summary: JMT is currently seeking a Surveying Technician I
- Rodman/Instrument Operator for their Winston-Salem, North Carolina Office. The successful candidate may operate surveying instruments such as conventional and Robotic Total Stations, Static and RTK/VRS GPS, and conventional and electronic levels. The position may be responsible for taking field notes, making field sketches, and entering data into data collectors and computers.
Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Position and hold the prism rods or targets that instrument operators use for measuring angles, distances, and elevations
- Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, sketches, and data collectors
- Run levels and level rods for benchmarks and cross-section elevations
- Search for property monuments and other survey points
- Set and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation
- Operate surveying instruments such as prism rods, Total Stations, and GPS equipment
- Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction using engineering plans
- Maintain equipment and load supplies in vehicles used by surveying crews
- Perform manual labor such as cutting brush for line of sight, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
- Valid Driver’s License
- Use Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD), accurate data entry skills, and ability to operate and master various electronic devices and software programs as needed for surveying and mapping
- Calculate rate, ratio, and percent and draw and interpret bar graphs
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Retain knowledge of daily routines and apply logic and common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions
- Work in small groups
- Solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s degree preferred, Field of Study:
Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or similar degree type or relevant experience - Related experience
- No prior experience necessary but preferred
Work is performed in the field 90% of the time. Ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 lbs. as needed. Work will be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. The employee will be required to walk while carrying equipment in various conditions and terrains from steep slopes to swaps and congested urban areas and roadways.
Work is performed within a general office environment 10% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
