What

You Will Do

As a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern at Collins Aerospace, you will:

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies with a focus on manufacturability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Prepare, modify, and release CAD (NX) drawings to ensure the fit, form, and function of mechanical designs.
  • Evaluate materials and parts for use in new designs.
  • Operate within a team environment, working cross-functionally to provide input on design solutions and actively participating in design reviews.
  • Perform design studies to validate project proposals and support development activities.
  • Conduct engineering calculations to determine the size and strength of components, solving design problems and validating analytical designs.
  • Utilize engineering tools such as Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) to validate and optimize design content.

    Develop expertise in using NX software to prepare and release precise mechanical designs.

    Learn how to assess materials and parts and build strong communication skills for supplier collaboration.

    Collaboration:

    Gain experience working in a cross‑functional team environment, contributing to design solutions and participating in collaborative design reviews.
  • Engineering Analysis:
    Strengthen your ability to perform detailed engineering calculations and support analytical designs through problem‑solving.
  • Validation Tools and Methodologies:
    Master the use of essential engineering tools such as prototype builds and DFMA to ensure robust and high‑performing designs.
  • Aerospace Applications:
    Develop an understanding of the unique challenges of aerospace engineering and how FAA requirements drive a variety of testing to replicate “real world scenarios” to ensure passenger safety.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co‑op session.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as Creo, Solid Works, NX, Catia, AutoCAD, Autodesk or equivalent

Experience may be obtained through on‑the‑job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and/or Outlook)
  • Experience managing projects and working on cross‑functional teams
  • A minimum of 60 hours of credit by the start of the internship / co‑op session
  • Prior RTX internship, co‑op, or work experience
