The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. Description Of WorkThe Employee Relations (ER) Consultant III will serve by supporting employees and management across DAC divisions and facilities in the central region of North Carolina. This includes the Second Judicial Division within the DAC Community Supervision Division and the central region of the DAC Institutions Division. The role is based in Raleigh, NC, and requires regular travel throughout the central region, with occasional statewide travel.
Responsibilities- Provide consultation to employees, supervisors, and management on complex and sensitive employee relations matters.
- Interpret and communicate HR policies and procedures related to:
- Disciplinary actions
- Grievances and complaints
- Separation due to unavailability
- Voluntary resignation without notice
- Investigatory leave with pay
- Drug/alcohol testing (reasonable suspicion)
- Fitness-for-duty and critical job function assessments
- Employee Assistance Program referrals
- Collaborate with other sections on processes such as:
- Reduction-In-Force
- Reasonable accommodation
- Workplace investigations
- Criminal Justice Certification
- Evaluate and analyze employee relations issues; make defensible decisions in compliance with state policies.
- Guide management on progressive discipline, coaching, counseling, and corrective action.
- Review and edit adverse disciplinary action letters for consistency and compliance.
- Conduct confidential workplace investigations.
- Serve as stand-by consultant for internal mediations (Step 1 of the grievance process).
- Respond to inquiries related to hiring practices, management concerns, working conditions, and other HR-related issues.

Bachelor’s degree, typically in Human Resources or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and 4 years of experience required

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and 6 years of progressive experience in Human Resources (OR) an equivalent combination of education and experience.
