Custodian/Housekeeper

Winston‑Salem State University (WSSU) is pleased to invite applications for a Building Environmental Services Technician who will be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining campus buildings for students, faculty, and staff.

• Daily routine cleaning and resupply of assigned work areas.
• Basic cleaning functions: sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, and removing trash.
• Fill dispensers (e.g., tissue and soap) to appropriate levels with proper product.
• Clean restroom floors, commodes, urinals, sinks, mirrors, and dispensers.
• Detail cleaning of assigned areas, including dusting and glass cleaning.
• Project‑related tasks such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional custodial outdoor work.
• Submit supply requests on a regular basis as directed by supervisor.
• Turn laundry in for regular cleaning, monitor equipment for malfunction, and correct minor equipment issues such as replacing vacuum bags or filters.
• Collaborate with peers to assist where needed, share resources and information, and provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff.
• Communicate professionally with other staff members, completing mandatory forms such as sign‑in/sign‑out for attendance and university property/equipment.
• Maintain a healthy and safe working environment by reporting equipment malfunctions, adhering to safety standards, and labeling and storing materials appropriately.
• Provide absentee coverage and other duties as directed by supervision.

• Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the ability to follow instructions while performing medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Experience with institutional cleaning in an educational setting, preferably higher education.
• Familiarity with a variety of cleaning equipment, including vacuums, burnishers, scrubbers, extractors, and wet vacs.
• Demonstrated flexibility in adapting to changes in job tasks and assignments.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license.
• Ability to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies, and to respond to on‑call/emergency callbacks.
• Compliance with all university safety and health standards and proper use of PPE.

Hours:

7 am–4 pm, Monday through Friday. 40 hours per week. Permanent Full‑Time.

• Salary range: $33,540 – $47,847 annually.
• Pay Scale: $33,540 at entry level; up to $47,847.
• Position is classified as Building Environmental Services Technician (Class 16785).
