Join one of the largest and most collaborative progressive units in the hospital! Novant Health’s Pulmonary Unit cares for a diverse respiratory patient population, including those with pneumonia, COPD, pulmonary embolism, influenza, and other respiratory conditions.
This is the perfect place to grow your skills and build confidence in a fast‑paced, supportive environment. You’ll gain hands‑on experience with tracheostomies, ventilators, CPAP/BIPAP, heated high‑flow oxygen therapy, and chest tubes—all while making a meaningful impact on patients’ lives every day. The structure allows RNs to focus on early intervention, advanced respiratory management, and proactive patient monitoring.

- RTs work directly on the unit to support nurses
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions, including COPD, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, influenza, and respiratory failure.
- Perform focused respiratory assessments and intervene early for patients with escalating oxygen and ventilatory needs.
- Manage specialized skills including:
- Tracheostomy and ventilated patient care
- CPAP/BIPAP and heated high‑flow oxygen therapy
- Chest tube management
- Administration of blood products and select IV drips
- Advance respiratory assessment and intervention, including proactive monitoring and early intervention.
- Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. 4‑year/Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Experience:
One year of acute nursing experience required. - Licensure/Certification:
Current RN licensure in the appropriate state required. Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Red Cross or American Heart Association required. - License Status:
If your RN license has been inactive, retired, or lapsed for five years or more and you have not been licensed in another state during the last five years, successful completion of a board‑approved refresher course is required prior to reactivating or reinstating your license. To be considered for current licensure status, you must apply for reinstatement within one year of completing the refresher course.
