The Nurse Summer Externship Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist offers a nine-week paid opportunity for senior nursing students to gain valuable hands-on experience while working alongside our experienced teams across the Wake area. This program serves as a significant stepping stone, helping senior nursing students enhance their clinical expertise as they prepare for the transition to become licensed Registered Nurses.

Program Dates:
May 31, 2027 - July 31, 2027 Final date to receive applications:
November 6, 2026

• Nursing students who will be entering their final year of nursing school at the start of the program with anticipated graduation December 2027 or May 2028
• Currently enrolled in an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
• Scheduled to complete Med/Surg clinical by Spring 2027
• Must possess current Basic Cardiac Life Support AHA (BCLS) or American Red Cross BLS certification
• Must be available to work continuous 40 hours per week for the duration of the Nurse Extern Summer Program.
• Must be available to participate in three 12-hour clinical shifts per week, in addition to scheduled specialty education sessions and/or clinical observation experiences.
• Must maintain scheduling flexibility, including availability for rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on departmental and program needs.

• Strengthen clinical competence, build confidence, and develop professional skills through hands-on experience within a large academic learning health system.
• Partner with a Registered Nurse preceptor who provides clinical guidance, mentorship, and support within the assigned clinical area
• Educational sessions covering simulation and didactic elements, focused on the latest practices in nursing specialties
• Specialty educational sessions that integrate simulation and didactic learning, with a focus on current practices across a variety of nursing specialties.
• Shadowing opportunities in clinical areas of interest
• Opportunity for continued PRN employment as an NA II upon completion of the Extern Program

• Must be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry (NA I) by April 16, 2027
• Must be listed as a Nurse Aide II (NA II) with the North Carolina Board of Nursing by May 14, 2027
• Must possess a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross BLS certification by May 14, 2027

• Participates in the implementation of the nursing process by providing direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
• Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges, and pre- and post-procedure care.
• Performs assigned clinical procedures under appropriate supervision.
• Creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, teammates, and visitors.
• Ensures accurate, timely, and effective communication of patient information.
• Provides age-appropriate care consistent with organizational and unit-based standards.
