Research Laboratory Technician II, Gerontology

Job Summary

A laboratory technician role is available in a biomedical research laboratory specializing in cellular metabolism measurements using sophisticated respirometry instrumentation. The technician will help support future and ongoing studies and trials by retrieving blood or tissue samples from a clinical research unit and assisting in their processing/isolation and assessment. Other duties may include coordinating with other laboratories or core facilities, assisting core facility users, analyzing data, and attending laboratory or study meetings.

Previous experience or education in a field related to metabolism or mitochondrial biology is a plus as is any past work with the Seahorse Extracellular Flux analyzer or the Oroboros O2k High Resolution Respirometer. On-the-job training will be provided.

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, or other related science, or a high school diploma with four years of related clinical/research experience.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct generally standardized chemical, physical, and biological tests on experimental/clinical materials.
  • Perform micro-analysis, lipid analysis, enzyme studies, and chromatographic studies on various types of tissues, secretions, and excretions.
  • Set up equipment and organize materials used in performing scheduled tests, experiments, and/or operations.
  • Select the appropriate experimental/clinical format from established standard formats and prepare simple charts, graphs, and reports from data obtained during research experiments and observations of research subjects.
  • Isolate and identify various microorganisms through established laboratory techniques.
  • Train and demonstrate to graduate students, medical students, and other technical personnel a variety of technical procedures.
  • Take blood samples, pressures, and other specimens and measurements as required by research/clinical protocols. Inoculate research animals with various pathogens and perform minor animal surgery.
  • Collect tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis; obtain samples, prepare, mount, and stain tissue, blood, and other substances for microscopic examinations.
  • Review scientific journals, abstracts, and other publications for information applicable to research projects.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Skills/Qualifications
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to interact with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Work Environment

Research laboratory environment with frequent exposure to diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common in a lab. Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection). Exposure to glass and other breakable objects. Exposure to animals.
