Job duties
- Maintain safety, custody, and supervision of offenders
- Conduct searches of offenders, visitors, cells, and facility areas for contraband
- Monitor offender activity in person and through surveillance systems
- Maintain offender counts, housing assignments, and required records
- Escort offenders within and outside the facility
- Supervise offender work assignments
- Identify and report behavioral, medical, or safety concerns
- Work assigned rotating, fixed, or split shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required
- Complete six weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT)
- Serve at correctional facilities in the listed western-region counties
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements under 12 NCAC 09G .0302
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver's license
- Ability to work any shift, including rotating, fixed, or split shifts
- Ability to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required
- Trainee:
High School or GED diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience - Correctional Officer I:
High School or GED diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience - Correctional Officer II:
High School or GED diploma and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer, or equivalent combination of education and experience - Correctional Officer III:
High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or equivalent combination of education and experience - Complete education history, including high school, in the application
- Provide full work experience details
- Education must be from appropriately accredited institutions
- New hires must complete six weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), including a required overnight weekday stay at the training facility
- Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Member-4 Form
- Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must provide the specified NGB or DD forms where applicable
Demonstrates the ability to maintain safety and supervision of offenders while conducting thorough searches and monitoring activities. Possesses the necessary qualifications and training to effectively manage offender assignments and respond to behavioral or medical concerns.
