Positions in this banded class perform law enforcement duties on the university campus or other state facilities. Officers wield full powers of arrest and enforce state and federal laws. Duties span traffic control, criminal investigations, pedestrian safety, emergency response, and campus security escorts within a defined geographic jurisdiction.

• Patrol campus, enforce state law, university policy, and parking regulations; perform educational‑focused enforcement and investigate all complaints.
• Respond to emergencies—including fire, medical, and active‑shooter or robbery situations—detain suspects, conduct interviews, and support judicial processes, including student conduct hearings.
• Collect, preserve, and maintain the chain of custody for evidence; testifying in court proceedings as required.
• Develop and participate in crime‑prevention programming such as Safety Education Tables, Liaison Programs, Faculty Enrichment Programs, RAD Program, ALICE Program, Bike Engravings, Residence Hall programs, and “Coffee with a Cop.”
• Assist with inspection, maintenance, and testing of campus emergency equipment (blue lights, AEDs, burglar alarms, patrol vehicles, etc.).
• Work at special events and other duties that support the university’s educational and performing‑arts mission.

• Police Trainee: High school diploma or GED; meet all eligibility criteria for the State of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy, including background check and physical agility requirements as per NC CJETSC and the hiring agency.
• Police Officer I: 0–2 years of law‑enforcement experience; completed NC BLET and be certified or have the ability to become certified within one year.
• Police Officer II: 2+ years as a sworn local, state or federal officer; completed NC BLET and hold at least a general certification from NC CJETSC.
• Police Officer III: 4+ years as a sworn officer; completed NC BLET and hold intermediate certification from NC CJETSC.
• Master Police Officer I: 6 years experience as a sworn officer; high school diploma or GED (advanced degree reduces experience requirement by 1 year); current NC CJETSC commission or eligible for certification.
• Master Police Officer II: 3 years as a Master Police Officer within campus agency or lateral hire with equivalent service; current NC CJETSC commission or eligibility.
• Master Police Officer III: 6 years as a Master Police Officer within campus agency or lateral hire with equivalent service; current NC CJETSC commission or eligibility.

High school diploma or GED.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to successfully pass Basic Law Enforcement Training.
