Performs complaint-based and proactive field inspections to ensure compliance with property maintenance, zoning, housing, sanitation, and quality-of-life ordinances. Accurately identifies code-related issues, clearly communicates requirements and corrective actions with owners and occupants, issues violation notices, and prepares and presents cases to the Special Magistrate when necessary.
Under the direction of the Safe Neighborhoods Director, interprets and applies the City’s Code of Ordinances. Conducts field inspections in response to citizen complaints and proactive activities to identify code-related issues. Communicates clearly, professionally, and courteously with property owners, occupants, and the public to explain ordinance requirements, compliance options, and corrective actions, with an emphasis on education and voluntary compliance. Coordinates with other City departments and external agencies to research issues, share information, and determine appropriate solutions.
Records and documents inspection results in a clear, accurate, and timely manner and prepares notices, affidavits, and related official documents to ensure proper citation, consistency, and procedural accuracy.
Conducts follow-up inspections to verify corrective action within established time frames and determine whether additional action is required. Conducts substandard housing inspections of residential property for compliance with the minimum property maintenance ordinance. Identifies and evaluates unsafe and uninhabitable structures and recommends properties for demolition when conditions meet established criteria. Prepares complete, well-organized case files and presents cases and testimony to the Special Magistrate as required.
Conducts damage assessments following natural disasters and assists with related documentation and reporting.
Operates a city vehicle to conduct inspections and uses various software systems to maintain accurate, detailed, and case-specific records of inspections, communications, and compliance activities.
Participates in community meetings and outreach activities to respond to neighborhood concerns and public inquiries. Attends training, seminars, and workshops to obtain certifications and remain current on applicable ordinances, laws, and procedures. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:- Ability to read, interpret, and clearly explain City ordinances, zoning codes, and land-use regulations.
