The Librarian II - Access Services leads frontline public service operations and provides supervisory oversight for staff assigned to that area. The Librarian II ensures consistent, high-quality public service, efficient operations, and alignment with library policies, professional standards, and organizational goals. This position supervises staff, manages workflows, and contributes to system-wide planning, decision-making, and continuous service improvement.

The Librarian II is a supervisory professional position responsible for managing one major service area within the library while contributing to overall library operations and strategic priorities. This role provides leadership for daily operations, staff supervision, service quality, policy implementation, and data-informed decision making.

In the Access Services assignment, the Librarian II oversees circulation and frontline service operations, including patron account services, materials handling, delivery workflows, and public service desk coverage. This individual ensures accurate transactions, consistent application of policies, staff training, and a welcoming, safe environment for patrons.

Across all assignments, Librarian II staff supervises and evaluates employees, develops and maintains procedures, analyzes service data, collaborates with other departments, and participates in planning, projects, and initiatives that support equitable access, operational consistency, and community-responsive library services.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of professional library principles, practices, and ethics; public service operations; staff supervision and training practices; integrated library systems and related technologies; data tracking and reporting tools; and current trends affecting public libraries and community services.
  • Ability to supervise and support staff effectively; interpret and apply policies consistently; analyze operational challenges and recommend improvements; communicate clearly with patrons, staff, and stakeholders; manage multiple priorities in a public service environment; and contribute collaboratively to library-wide initiatives.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate workflows; staff scheduling and performance management; prepare reports and maintain records using library technologies and office software; and deliver responsive, professional public service.
  • A Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of library experience required.
  • Master's of Library and Informational Science preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that is determined to be directly related to the forgoing specific requirements may be substituted.
