Primary Functions:

Apply sub-coatings and finish coatings to all metal components and finished products. Perform all painting requirements from individual parts to complete vehicle paint applications in both solid and metallic colors. Mix products according to specifications, inspect painted materials for proper surface condition and preparation, and repair as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Understand and carry out verbal and written directions in English.

* Maintain close attention to detail.

* Work with minimal or no supervision.

* Set work priorities to meet scheduled production goals.

* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

* Meet departmental safety standards.

* Meet minimum 5S standards.

* Mix coatings with thinner and catalyst using color mixture equipment.

* Apply coatings using various spray equipment to meet coverage and gloss standards.

* Correct application errors in all coating types.

* Paint parts to required quality standards.

* Clean and inspect parts prior to painting.

* Follow all procedures required for a quality, durable paint finish.

* Mix and spray all paint products used in the process.

* Maintain spray equipment in operational condition (excluding repairs).

* Follow hazardous waste disposal and fire prevention procedures.

* Keep equipment and work area clean and organized.

* Assist in training other painters in production and quality standards.

* Comply with company rules of conduct and attendance.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

* Ensure hazardous waste is placed in proper containers.

* Keep satellite and storage waste containers closed except when adding or removing waste.

* Maintain familiarity with the Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan.

* Know spill response procedures and evacuation routes.

Qualifications and Training

* Ability to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate simple instructions, correspondence, and memos in English.

* Ability to understand verbal instructions presented in English.

* Ability to read English and metric tape measures and use measuring devices.

* Ability to perform work within acceptable quality and time standards.

* Ability to recognize and consistently reproduce expected quality standards.

* Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings.

* Ability to operate dual-action sanders, grinders, and other hand tools.

* Ability to spray primers using an air paint system.

* Ability to read and interpret shop orders to determine required paint colors.

* Ability to assess proper surface conditions for paint acceptance and prepare surfaces as needed.

* Full knowledge of quality requirements for acceptable finish paint.

* Ability to spray an entire vehicle body to acceptable quality standards.

* Ability to retain and apply information related to chemicals and proper usage.

* Ability to learn and perform paint and primer mixing procedures.

* General knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards.

* Hazardous Materials Handling Operations training with annual refresher training.

* Hazardous waste training within six months of assuming the position.

* Annual hazardous waste training review every 12 months thereafter.

* Supervision until hazardous waste training is completed.

* Training includes:

* Minimum 30 minutes of classroom instruction.

* Additional on-the-job training as needed.

* Familiarization with responsibilities outlined in the Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan.

Physical Demands

* Regularly stand, use hands, and reach with hands and arms.

* Frequently walk throughout the work area.

* Occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

* Regularly lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. without assistance.

* Work from squatting, kneeling, and bending positions.

* Work with arms overhead.

* Work from ladders and scaffolding.

* Stand at a workstation for up to 10 hours per day, excluding scheduled breaks.

* Perform all operations within established quality and time standards.
