The High School Social Studies Teacher provides learning experiences in Social Studies and helps each student develop an understanding of historical events, civic responsibilities, cultural perspectives, and the connections between past and present. The Social Studies Teacher fosters critical thinking, inquiry, analysis of primary and secondary sources, and informed participation in a democratic society. The teacher motivates students to engage in meaningful discussions, evaluate diverse perspectives, and apply social studies concepts to real-world issues.
The High School Social Studies Teacher reports to the principal.
- Provides learning experiences in Social Studies, guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements, while creating an environment that is conducive to student learning, inquiry, collaboration, and active participation. Monitors students' understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments when appropriate.
- Evaluates, implements, and refines instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, primary sources, research, discussion-based learning, and other available resources to increase student learning, engagement, critical thinking, and confidence.
- Encourages students to analyze historical and current events, evaluate multiple perspectives, develop evidence-based arguments, and understand the role of individuals and communities in shaping society.
- Demonstrates appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals and strives to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning by creating an inclusive classroom environment that values diverse experiences and viewpoints.
- Maintains and improves professional competence through attendance at professional development events, collaboration with colleagues, and self-generated activities that meet district expectations and the requirements for re-certification.
- Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of his/her grade/team/department, building, and school district, attending all faculty and committee meetings as required, and district-wide committees as needed.
- Other duties, as assigned.
- Licensed, or eligible for licensure in History/Social Science 8-12 by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education.
- Meets all Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education standards for Highly Qualified Teacher.
- Bachelor's Degree, Master’s preferred, from an accredited college or university, in History, Social Studies, Education, or a related field.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to children and adults.
- Commitment to remain current in content knowledge, historical scholarship, civic education, and effective teaching strategies.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements.
