At McCain, we believe in developing future talent and creating opportunities for long-term career growth. We are seeking a motivated and mechanically inclined Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Apprentice to join our Maintenance team at our Wisconsin Rapids facility.

What You’ll Be Doing.

This role provides hands‑on training and practical experience in industrial electrical systems, process instrumentation, automation, and control within a fast‑paced food manufacturing environment. Working alongside experienced electricians and instrumentation technicians, the E&I Apprentice will develop the technical knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and safety mindset required to support reliable plant operations while progressing through a structured apprenticeship program.

  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Support daily maintenance activities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
  • Learn to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, technical manuals, and equipment documentation.
  • Assist with the testing, calibration, and maintenance of process instrumentation devices, including pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement systems.
  • Support troubleshooting and maintenance activities involving PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, and automated control systems under supervision.
  • Assist with motor control systems, including variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor starters, MCCs, and power distribution equipment.
  • Participate in preventive and predictive maintenance programs to improve equipment reliability.
  • Support equipment upgrades, commissioning activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and work orders within the CMMS system.
  • Follow all food safety, quality, sanitation, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.
  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical safety standards, and safe work practices.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment through collaboration, communication, and continuous learning.
What You’ll Need To Be Successful.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Interest in electrical systems, industrial maintenance, automation, or instrumentation.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment.
  • Willingness to enroll in and complete a registered apprenticeship or related technical training program.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work in industrial manufacturing environments, including exposure to heat, cold, noise, and food processing equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred
  • Completion of coursework in:
    • Electrical Technology
    • Electro-Mechanical Technology
    • Industrial Maintenance
    • Mechatronics
    • Automation & Controls
  • Prior manufacturing, maintenance, military, or technical experience.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, electrical circuits, and industrial controls.
  • Understanding of food manufacturing environments and GMP requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong desire to learn industrial electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory and troubleshooting concepts.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a production-driven environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
