Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Position Summary
The Powered Industrial Truck Technician/Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing powered industrial trucks and material handling equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient mill operations. This includes forklifts, clamp trucks, and other mobile equipment used throughout the facility. The mechanic performs preventive maintenance, diagnoses mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel system issues, replaces defective components, and conducts safety inspections in accordance with OSHA regulations, manufacturer specifications, and company maintenance standards.
This role requires maintaining accurate maintenance records, minimizing equipment downtime, supporting production by responding to equipment breakdowns, and promoting a safe work environment through adherence to lockout/tagout procedures and established safety policies.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job‑related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At ND Paper, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.

- Demonstrate safety as a core value and establish a safe work environment by actively leading the safe execution of work.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems on forklifts and MHE.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on electric and internal combustion forklifts.
- Replace or repair faulty parts such as hydraulic cylinders, brakes, transmissions, and motors.
- Conduct safety inspections and ensure equipment complies with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Maintain accurate service records and complete documentation for each job.
- Respond to emergency repair calls and provide on‑site support when needed.
- Keep tools, parts, and service area clean and organized.
- Communicate with supervisors and operators regarding equipment condition and repair timelines.
- Perform routine maintenance on pickup trucks and skid steers.
- Order and maintain parts needed for repairs.

- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- 2+ years of experience repairing forklifts or heavy equipment.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, hydraulics, engines, and transmissions.
- Ability to read schematics, service manuals, and diagnostic tools.
- Basic computer skills for work order documentation and parts lookup.
- Valid driver’s license (required); CDL is a plus.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying conditions (indoor/outdoor, heights, confined spaces).
- Bilingual in Mandarin a plus.
- Certification from a forklift manufacturer (Toyota, Hyster, Crown, etc.) or technical school.
- Experience with electric‑powered warehouse equipment (pallet jacks, order pickers, etc.).
- Knowledge of OSHA and ANSI safety regulations for industrial vehicles.
